Pupils Play Architect for the Day
Design School Workshops
3 August 2009
- Working with Gloucestershire County Council, and Gloucester Schools Partnership, ADP has recently hosted a series of school workshops.
Oakwood Primary School Design Day and ‘Future Funky Learning Spaces’ were lead by Simon Kneafsey and supported by architects across three of the practice’s five studios.
Students in the county got an insight into architecture, including space planning for classrooms and social areas, and enjoyed first hand experience of contributing to the design of their school’s.
As part of the new school design for Oakwood Primary School, the 'School Design Day' invited children from Lynworth and Waddon Primary Schools to participate in a class consultation and put forward their ideas. The pupils got to work in groups alongside interior and landscape architects, experimenting with various themes including colours and interiors for classrooms, as well as landscaping of play areas and sustainability.
Imaginations ran wild and suggestions included a vegetable garden, pupil common room, community gym and workshop spaces, as well as quirky design statements such as water features and a disco ball constructed from solar panels.
‘Future Funky Learning Spaces’, held at the University of Gloucester, is one of a series of workshops held by the local council, as part of the Building Schools for the Future initiative, with a focus on modern and innovative design solutions for the secondary school education environment.
