University of Edinburgh student takes first prize

24 April 2009
  • Following the last of our Bricks and Mortals exhibitions in London, we are delighted to reveal that Simon Johnson (shown opposite) from the University of Edinburgh has been selected as the competition's first prize winner. This new and dynamic competition was launched toward the end of last year, and invited entries principally from architecture and photography students across the UK. The two exhibitions held in Manchester and London were a great success, and offered a unique opportunity to enjoy the highly creative response the competition received from some very promising photographic talent.

Simon's image 'Figure' (shown on ADP's homepage) was selected from a wealth of very strong entries. He was joined in second place by Neil Boyd from Strathclyde University with the photograph 'Disrupted Space', and by Nicholas Humes from Queen's University Belfast in third place with his entry 'Architecture Under the Obvious.'

Simon has won a £1000 commission to photograph an ADP building plus £750 of Jessops vouchers.

"The competition gave the opportunity to try to create something very original and exciting. I found the brief suitably challenging but highly engaging. I had set out to experiment and to see what might occur on my journey around Edinburgh - a kind of process of discovery around the theme. The competition was a huge confidence boost and an amazing opportunity to have work exhibited."

Simon, who has been interested in photography for the past nine years, is currently finishing his Part II with a Master of Architecture at Edinburgh. His image was unanimously chosen by the panel of judges, who included acclaimed architectural photographer Peter Cook, Article 25's CEO Dr. Victoria Harris, and Robert Rummey of Rummey Design Associates. ADP Partner, Roger FitzGerald, was also a judge, and commented:

"We felt Simon’s photograph best captured the subtle relationship between people and buildings. The picture itself is a well-lit and well thought out piece of photography. He thoroughly deserves the winner's prize and is certainly a talent to look out for in the future. We are excited to have Simon photograph one of our buildings, and look forward to seeing the results.”

We are thrilled to announce that the charity auction of the photographs on display raised over £1800 for Article 25. Winning bidders will be contacted shortly, and ADP wish to extend a sincere thank you to our our guests for their generosity in aid of a very worthwhile cause.
